Tellicherry vs Malabar Black Pepper
Black pepper from Kerala's Malabar coast has been traded for over 2,000 years. Today, two grades dominate the world market: Tellicherry Garbled Extra Bold (TGEB) and Malabar Garbled 1 (MG1). Both come from the same plant — Piper nigrum — but they're very different products.
The Key Difference
It comes down to berry size and piperine content (the compound that gives pepper its bite).
| Grade | Berry Size | Piperine | Price/kg | Aroma |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TGEB (Tellicherry) | 4.5mm+ | 5–9% | ₹1,650 | Bold, complex |
| MG1 (Malabar) | 4mm+ | 4–7% | ₹1,250 | Strong, classic |
When to Buy Tellicherry
- You finish pepper with a mill at the table
- You cook steaks, charcuterie, gourmet pasta
- You want the absolute best (export-grade)
- You appreciate complex aroma over raw heat
When to Buy Malabar
- You use pepper daily in Indian cooking
- You want best value for money
- You add pepper to dishes during cooking (not finishing)
- You buy in 500g or 1kg quantities
Both Are Excellent
Neither is "better" — they're different tools for different jobs. Most professional kitchens stock both: Tellicherry for finishing, Malabar for everyday cooking.
